Deliverance Ministries

A Word of Warning About Deliverance Ministries

Recently I have been made aware of a new "fad" in the Christian Community called 'Deliverance Ministries'. It came to a head today when I discovered a new follower to my Twitter account who declares to be a member of a "Christian Counseling and Deliverance Ministry". This group not only offers Christian counseling and a 'deliverance ministry', but it also offers "Counseling Degrees and Deliverance Training".

To me, this was a big, Holy Spirit Red Flag. So I used a search engine to discover what I could about Deliverance Ministries. As I suspected, this is something that some people are using to draw attention to themselves, just like the snake handlers do. Although they claim to be doing such in accordance to biblical text ( see Mark 16:17-18, for example), it fits more along the lines of the warning Christ gave, as is recorded in Matthew 7:15-23.

A Tree and Its Fruit

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

I Never Knew You

21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

The best article I found was on allaboutgod.com. It was so good, I wanted to share it with you, so that you might also gain a better understanding regarding this topic. So here is an excerpt from the article, with a link at the bottom for those who would like to read the entire article. I hope you find it as helpful and edifying as I did. \o/

Deliverance Ministries – A Definition
Deliverance Ministries may have various definitions among Christians. The most common definitions revolve around solving a person’s problems related to demons, spirits, and possession. Those who promote and practice deliverance ministry claim that Christians can be indwelt with demons. In order to be free from addictions, depression, and all sorts of sins that may weigh or afflict the person, the demon must be exorcised. Deliverance ministry claims that this sets the afflicted person free from the “bondage” they are experiencing. It is common for the person to attend a series of “discipleship” classes ending with exorcisms as the form of treatment.

Deliverance Ministry is a contemporary movement that is gaining ground and is crossing denominational lines. Although it is gaining popularity, many Christians are now seeing it as a negative and unbiblical practice that can have serious and disastrous consequences, even though it claims to offer “freedom” to the individual. There are even support groups forming to help people who have been victimized from various deliverance ministries.
